For most part the mouse is comfortable, although we didn't like the rubber coated scroll wheel which takes is slower than most others we have used. It is a five-button mouse with a scroll wheel, left and right-click buttons as well as two thumb buttons. The IntelliMouse Explorer included in the package also worked well and can be used as soon as the Fingerprint reader is connected to your PC. The Fingerprint Reader also doesn't prevent others from guessing your password and typing it in - the usual hazards of using passwords still apply. Microsoft suggests that the Reader should not be used to protect highly sensitive information and is for convenience, rather than high-level security. It does work with most other programs though - we used the Reader to protect log-ins for Lotus Notes and MSN Messenger, just to name a few. Unfortunately, the Fingerprint Reader does not work with any browser other than Internet Explorer, which is a major drawback for those who prefer the popular Mozilla Firefox. At any time, you can scan your finger to bring up the convenient One Touch Menu, which allows you to edit settings including sounds, prompts and taskbar options. If your read is unsuccessful, a yellow question mark appears instead. When your fingerprint is successfully scanned a small icon is displayed in the left hand corner of the screen, which signifies that the read was successful with a green light. Once you have set-up the Reader to register your prints, it is a simple matter of going to any password-protected website or program and scanning your print to create a fingerprint logon. But if you’re using a local account, you can evade the login screen and jump directly to your Windows desktop each time you boot up. With a Microsoft account, you have to authenticate yourself at the login screen, if not with a password, then with a PIN or other means. What if you want to bypass the login screen altogether? That’s possible but it depends on the type of account you use. For added security, you can even tell Windows not to display a password option at the sign-in screen. A physical security key is yet another option supported by Windows Hello. And if your computer has a supported fingerprint reader or camera, you can turn to fingerprint scanning or facial recognition. In Windows 10 and 11, you can set up a PIN or a picture password. And if you carry your laptop with you on the road, you need to make sure no one can access your information if your device ever gets lost or stolen.īut if you want to sneak past the requirement of entering your password each time your PC wakes up, there are a couple of options available, courtesy of Microsoft’s Windows Hello feature. If you work in an office or other location with people milling about, you'll want to secure Windows so no one can peek at your documents, files, and other information.
